What I Can Help You With

Most people who get in touch start by asking whether I work with a particular thing. Usually the answer is yes.

The people around you

Most of the people I see are women. Men tend to put this off for longer, which is why there's a page written for exactly that. Whoever you are, if what's going on isn't on this list, it almost certainly still fits. Ask me and I'll tell you honestly.

Meet David Lloyd

There's no script when you sit down with me. I'll ask what's brought you here, and then I'll mostly listen. Between us, we'll work out what would actually help.

Some people want something practical they can use that week. Others just need somewhere to say out loud the thing they haven't said to anyone. Both are fine. I'm not going to tell you I've got everything sorted in my own life either, because I haven't, and I don't think you'd want a counsellor who claimed that.

I came to this later than most. Years in the finance sector came first, and alongside all of it, a lifetime in karate. I started at 11, competed for England from 1984, and later coached the national squad.

One thing from coaching stayed with me. A coach once tried to make our whole squad fight the same way, and it didn't work, because we'd each built our game around our own strengths. I don't try to fit people into one model either.

I've been in practice since 2013. I hold a Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling, a Diploma in Hypnotherapy, and an advanced diploma in counselling supervision, and I tutor counselling students for one of the largest training providers in the country.

Most practices around here specialise in one area. I work with individuals, couples, and organisations, so you don't need a different person for every part of your life.

You don't need to have everything figured out before you get in touch.

Counselling Questions People Often Ask

What is counselling?

A regular conversation with someone trained to listen properly and help you make sense of what's going on. It isn't advice, and I won't tell you what to do. Most of the work is understanding why something has a hold on you, and what actually shifts it.

What's the difference between counselling and therapy?

In practice, very little. People use the words interchangeably and so do most practitioners. Counselling sometimes describes shorter, more focused work and psychotherapy longer-term work, but there's no hard line between the two.

How much does a session cost?

£50 an hour for individuals and £60 for couples, in person or online. Book four sessions and pay for them up front and it is 15% less. The first full session is half price, and the 15-minute call before it is free. Supervision and workplace work are quoted separately.

What happens in a first session?

Mostly you talk and I listen. I'll ask what brought you here and what you'd like to be different. There's nothing to prepare, and you don't have to tell me everything at once.

How many sessions will I need?

There's no set number. Some people come for a handful of sessions to work through one thing, others stay longer. We'll talk about it as we go, and you're free to stop whenever you want to.

Does counselling actually work?

A great deal depends on the relationship between you and the person you're working with, which is why the first session matters. If it doesn't feel right, it's worth saying so, whether that's to me or to someone else.
