Couples and Marriage Counselling in Milton Keynes

Couples work is a large part of my week+You do not both have to be ready

For couples at any stage. Trying to repair something, trying to understand it, or trying to work out how to separate without wrecking each other on the way out.

I do a lot of couples work. It is a large part of my week.

What Sits Under This

Almost nobody arrives able to name the real problem, and almost nobody is arguing about the thing they are arguing about. The full version of that, including the eight causes that come up again and again and the listening exercise I use more than anything else, is on the couples therapy page. If you only read one thing here, read that, and try the exercise before you book anything.

Marriage counselling and couples counselling are the same work under two names. People search for both, so both are listed, and there is no separate service behind one of them.

Separation and divorce sit under this heading too. Couples work is not about keeping two people together, and sometimes the honest outcome is that you separate. Doing that with some understanding of what happened is a legitimate result, particularly where there are children, because you will be dealing with each other for a long time either way. That page covers what the work looks like when the decision has already been made.

You Do Not Both Have to Be Ready

The most common reason people put this off is that one of them is willing and the other is not.

Come on your own. It is worth doing, it is a normal way to start, and plenty of useful work happens with one person in the room. Sometimes the other one comes along later, once they can see what it actually is rather than what they imagined it would be. If that is your situation, relationship counselling for one person is written for exactly it.

Where, and What It Costs

In person in Wolverton, which is a short drive from Stony Stratford and straightforward to reach from Newport Pagnell, Bletchley and Woburn Sands, or online. Couples sessions usually run longer than individual ones, so ask me and I will tell you the cost straight away rather than making you hunt for it.

If money is the thing standing between you and doing something, Relate is a charity, is generally cheaper than private practice, and covers Milton Keynes. I would rather say that than have you do nothing.

You can read what happens in a first session before deciding.

If There Is Abuse in the Relationship

Couples work is not the right thing where one partner is frightened of the other. Joint sessions can make things more dangerous rather than less. This is standard practice, not caution on my part.

  • National Domestic Abuse Helpline, run by Refuge, free, 24 hours: 0808 2000 247
  • If you are worried about your own behaviour towards a partner, Respect Phoneline, Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm: 0808 802 4040
  • Immediate danger: 999

You Can Start This on Your Own

Send me a message with a couple of lines about what is happening. You do not need your partner's agreement to do that, and you do not have to have decided anything yet.
