Counselling and Psychotherapy in Milton Keynes
In practice since 2013+One counsellor, start to finish
This is the main part of what I do. One to one sessions, in person in Wolverton or online, for the things that are difficult to say out loud to anyone else.
Most people who contact me start by asking whether I work with a particular problem. Usually the answer is yes.
What Sits Under This
People arrive with a named thing. Grief that has not moved. A temper that keeps costing them something. A low mood that has outstayed whatever started it.
Where the thing has a page of its own, I have written it out properly rather than left you a paragraph. If someone has died and you are trying to work out whether you need help or just time, start with bereavement counselling, which opens by saying that most people come through it without a counsellor and then describes exactly what being stuck looks like. If it is temper, and the same argument keeps ending the same way, anger management counselling explains the stacking pattern that most people are actually describing when they say it keeps happening. And if you are a man who has been putting this off, counselling for men is the page written for exactly that, including five things you can try before booking anything.
The rest of the common ones are written out too. Anxiety and panic covers what is happening in your body as well as in your head, and why being told to stop worrying has never once worked. Depression is the page for a mood that flattened out and then stayed flat. Stress and burnout is the one to read if you are still functioning and that is precisely the problem. Self-esteem and confidence is about the voice that gets the last word. Counselling for people pleasing is for the pattern of saying yes when you meant no, and then resenting everyone for asking. And addiction counselling is there whether it is drink, drugs, gambling or something nobody around you has noticed yet.
I also work with trauma, both recent and from a long time ago, and that page says plainly what I am and am not trained in before it says anything else. Sleep and illness, whether it is yours or someone else's, do not have pages of their own yet, so if one of them is what brought you here, say so in a message and I will tell you honestly whether I am the right person.
Counselling or Psychotherapy, and Why I List Both
People search for both and mean much the same thing. Broadly, counselling tends to describe shorter work on something current, and psychotherapy longer work on patterns that go further back. In practice the line moves depending on who you ask, and in the room it moves depending on what turns up.
I am trained across several approaches rather than one, which means I do not fit you to a model. What happens is decided by what you bring, not by which method I happen to have trained in most recently.
Generally, whatever someone arrives with is the symptom rather than the cause. Part of the work is turning the volume down on the thing that is making today hard, and part of it is finding out what is underneath and driving it.
Where, and How Often
Sessions are in person in Wolverton, a few minutes from Stony Stratford and easy to reach from Newport Pagnell, Bletchley and Woburn Sands, or online if that suits you better. Online works, and it is not a lesser version of the same thing.
There is a third option that suits some people better than either. Walk and talk therapy is the same hour, outdoors and side by side instead of in chairs. People who find being looked at hard, or who simply think better moving, often say more on a path than they would in a room.
How often we meet and when is something we agree together rather than something I impose. You can read what happens in a first session before you commit to anything.
Not Sure Which of These Fits
Send me a message and tell me what is going on, in as much or as little detail as you want. I read them myself, and if it turns out someone else is the better fit, I will say so.
