Parent Coaching in Milton Keynes
A qualified counsellor, not a parenting course+Nobody is assessing you or your child
Ten past four. You can feel it starting before anybody has said a word, and you already know roughly how the next hour goes.
Then the guilt afterwards, once they are asleep and look about six again. That part is its own separate problem and it helps nobody, least of all them.
If It's Your Child's Behaviour, Start Somewhere Else
Worth two minutes before you book anything.
If what you want is to change what your child does, the thing with the weight of evidence behind it is a structured parenting programme. Not counselling. A course, usually run in a group, usually over several weeks, teaching a specific set of things to do and say.
A review of fifty-seven randomised trials found those programmes improved children's behaviour, with a bigger improvement when parents rated it than when independent observers did. Both were real. The gap between the two is the part the course brochures leave out, and it is worth knowing before you start.
Milton Keynes Family Centres run parenting courses, and your health visitor or your child's school will know what is currently running. Ask there first. I would rather say that on this page than get to it in week four of you paying me.
What I'm Actually For
You already know what you are supposed to do. You have read the book. You can recite the calm sentence you are meant to say.
The sentence is not the problem. The problem is what happens in your chest at ten past four, and how fast it happens, and the fact that you are running on about five hours' sleep and a day at work that did not go well.
That is the bit I work with: your own state, which is the one thing in the house you have any real say over.
People arrive with this in a few different shapes. Tiredness that stopped being tiredness a while ago and turned into something flatter. Guilt that has built up over months and now gets in the way of enjoying any of it. A temper louder than they ever meant it to be, often in a voice they recognise from their own childhood and swore they would never use. Or a child who is genuinely fine, and a parent lying awake about them anyway.
If It's Mostly the Temper
Say so in your first message, because that is a slightly different piece of work and it is better started properly. The anger management page sets out what it involves, including what to do if you have already frightened yourself.
When the Two of You Don't Agree About It
One of you holds the line. The other one caves. Both of you are now fairly sure the other is the reason none of it is working, and your child found the gap between you long before either of you did, because children are very good at that and it is not a character flaw.
What usually happens next is that the argument stops being about bedtime. It becomes about respect, or about who does more, and bedtime is just where you both happen to be standing when it goes off.
This works with one of you or with both. If the disagreement turns out to be about the relationship rather than the child, couples therapy is the better room. If you are separated and trying to parent across two houses, divorce and separation covers that ground.
Does Working on the Parent Change Anything for the Child
Fair question, and it deserves an honest answer rather than a reassuring one.
The research that speaks to it is on programmes teaching parents to manage their own stress and attention. A review of twenty-five of those studies found parenting stress improved by a modest amount, and the improvement was larger two months later than it had been at the end, which is not the usual pattern. Children's outcomes improved as well, by less.
The same reviewers rated the risk of bias in those studies as serious, so treat it as encouraging rather than settled. I am not going to dress it up as more than that. What I would say is that the direction matches what happens in the room. Households tend to settle from the adult outwards.
Two Things This Is Not
It is not an assessment. Nothing gets written up, nothing goes to your child's school, and there is no verdict at the end about how you are doing.
It is not therapy for your child. I can see a sixteen or seventeen year old with a parent's consent, but younger children need somebody who specialises in them, and I will tell you that rather than take the booking.
Where We Would Work
In person in Wolverton, within easy reach of Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell, Bletchley and Woburn Sands. Online sessions exist for the obvious reason, which is that childcare is the thing standing between most parents and an appointment.
You can read what happens in a first session before committing to anything. This sits under family counselling, if you want to see what else is there.
Common Questions
What's the Difference Between Parent Coaching and Counselling?
Less than the two words suggest. I am a counsellor and a coach, and which one is doing the work depends on what you bring. Thinking out loud about how to handle a fifteen year old who has stopped speaking is coaching. Finding that you are carrying something from your own childhood into the kitchen every evening is counselling. Most people need some of both, and nobody has to decide which in advance.
Do You Need to Meet My Child?
Usually not. Most of this work is with the parent, or with both parents, and that is the design rather than a compromise. If it becomes clear your child needs support of their own, I will say so and point you at where to look.
Will You Tell Me I'm Doing It Wrong?
No. You have almost certainly said harder things to yourself already this week, and me joining in would be a poor use of your money. I will ask you questions you may not enjoy, which is a different thing.
My Partner Thinks This Is a Waste of Time. Can I Come on My Own?
Yes, and plenty do. One person changing how they handle the evening changes the evening, whether or not the other one ever books anything. It is better with both. Waiting for both can cost you a year.
Is This for Toddlers or Teenagers?
Either. It looks different. With small children it is more often about your own exhaustion and temper. With teenagers it is more often about how much rope to give, and how to keep a door open when they are not using it. Tell me their age when you get in touch.
Do You Have to Report What I Tell You?
Sessions are confidential. The exception is where I believe a child is at risk of serious harm, where I have a duty to pass it on, and wherever possible I would tell you I was doing it. That is standard for any counsellor. Better that you know it now than find it out later.
