Phobia Counselling in Milton Keynes
Trained in counselling and hypnotherapy+Nothing happens before you're ready
You already know the fear is out of proportion. That is the maddening part, and being told so by somebody else has never once helped.
Phobias shrink your life quietly. You stop taking that road. You find a reason not to go. Then one day the thing you have spent years working around turns out to be standing in front of something you actually wanted.
What Is Actually Happening
The reaction is not a thought. It fires before you have had a chance to decide anything, and the reasoning part of you arrives late, holding a perfectly good argument that nobody is listening to. That is why knowing it is irrational changes nothing.
The part that grows is the avoiding. Every time you go round it, the fear collects a little more evidence that going round it was necessary. Which is how something that started as a dislike of lifts ends up dictating which building you will work in.
The ones people bring me most: driving on the grid roads and the roundabouts, flying, needles and blood, spiders, small spaces, lifts, dentists, heights, and being sick.
How I Work with It
We start by working out what the phobia is attached to, because that decides everything else. Sometimes it really is a single fear sitting on its own, learned somewhere and never unlearned. Often it is one visible corner of something larger, and the flying is not really about flying.
Hypnosis is one of the routes I use for this, and phobias are the thing it suits best, because a phobia is not a problem you can reason your way out of. You already tried that. You stay awake for it, you remember it, and you can stop at any point. There is more on how it works on the hypnotherapy page.
The other half of it is ordinary counselling, which is where the attached things get dealt with.
What will not happen is an ambush. Nobody produces a spider. The pace is set by you and I will tell you what we are doing before we do it.
What the Guidelines Recommend, and Where I Fit
Worth saying plainly. The best-evidenced treatment for a straightforward specific phobia is graded exposure, meaning careful, structured steps towards the thing itself. It is the benchmark researchers measure everything else against, including in the trials that test virtual reality against the real thing. If that is what you want, your GP is the route to it.
Hypnosis has real effects, though the fullest look at it, a 2024 review gathering forty-nine meta-analyses, puts its strongest evidence in pain and medical procedures rather than here.
So here is who I think this suits. People whose phobia is tangled up with something else, where a course of exposure would treat the symptom and leave the rest. And people who will not do an exposure programme, which is a large group, because being told the treatment involves approaching the thing is exactly why they have not been to anyone.
When It Is Anxiety Rather Than a Phobia
If the fear has no particular address, and it attaches to whatever is nearest, that is usually anxiety rather than a phobia, and it is worked with differently.
If the avoiding has spread to the point where leaving the house is hard, please start with your GP. That is bigger than one fear and there is more available to you than me.
And if there is a date on it, a flight in five weeks or a procedure booked, say so in your first message. It changes how we use the time and it is better known at the start than found out in week three.
Where We Would Work
In person in Wolverton, within easy reach of Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell, Bletchley and Woburn Sands. Online sessions work for most of this, and for some phobias they are easier to start with.
You can read what happens in a first session before committing to anything.
Common Questions
Will You Make Me Face the Thing?
No. Not in the first session and not in any session you have not agreed to. Some people do want to work towards it and we can, at whatever pace you set. Plenty of people never go near it and still get what they came for.
Can Hypnosis Get Rid of a Phobia in One Session?
You will see that promised. I am not going to promise it. Some phobia work is genuinely short, shorter than open-ended counselling, and I will tell you if I think yours is. What I cannot do is tell you the number before I have met you.
What If I Can't Be Hypnotised?
Some people find it easy and some find it does very little, and there is no reliable way to know which you are until you try. It is not about being gullible or strong-minded. If it does nothing for you, we work the other way instead, and nothing has been wasted.
Is Fear of Flying the Same as a Phobia?
Usually, though not always about the flying. For some people it is heights, for some it is being enclosed, and for a lot of people it is having no control for four hours. Which one it is changes what we do, so it is the first thing I would ask.
I've Had It Since I Was a Child. Is It Too Late?
No. How long you have had it matters less than you would think, and it is usually a poor guide to how long the work takes.
Tell Me What You're Avoiding
Send me a message and describe it in your own words. You do not have to justify it or explain why it doesn't make sense, and I promise not to be surprised by whatever it is.
