Insomnia Counselling in Milton Keynes

Trained in counselling and hypnotherapy+For when it's your head keeping you awake

Half past three, and you are doing the arithmetic again. Four and a half hours if you drop off now. Three if you don't.

The tiredness is bad enough. For a lot of people the worse part is the dread that starts building around nine in the evening, because you already know how the night is going to go.

Two Different Problems Share One Name

This is worth two minutes before you book anything, because it decides who should be helping you.

The first is insomnia as the problem in its own right. Something set it off, possibly years ago, and it no longer matters what that was, because the sleep problem now runs under its own steam. The bed itself has become the trigger. You could fall asleep on the sofa at ten and be wide awake the second your head touches the pillow.

The second is sleep as the casualty. Something happened, or something has been grinding away for months, and sleep is simply where it shows up first. Nothing has gone wrong with your sleeping. Your sleeping is reporting accurately.

If It's the First One

Then the treatment with the evidence behind it is not counselling and it is not hypnotherapy. It is CBT-I, a short structured programme aimed at the sleep itself. The European insomnia guideline, updated in 2023, recommends it as the first thing to try for long-running insomnia at any age, whether delivered in person or through an app.

I do not provide CBT-I. Ask your GP about it, and ask specifically for CBT-I rather than for sleeping tablets, because they are different conversations. I would rather tell you that here than take your money and get to it in week four.

If It's the Second One, Which Is Most of Who I See

Grief. A marriage that has been going wrong for a while. Redundancy, or the wait to find out. A diagnosis, yours or someone else's. Work that has not let up since March. These do not feel like sleep problems, which is why people describe them as sleep problems.

The two are more tangled than most sleep advice admits. A 2022 review of twenty-two trials put the overlap at almost seven in ten: nearly 70% of people being treated for a mental health problem report difficulty sleeping, and around 30% meet the full criteria for insomnia. The same review found that treating the sleep improved the underlying condition too, not only the nights.

Which cuts both ways, and is the reason working on what is actually keeping you awake is not a detour from the sleep problem.

Where Hypnosis Fits

It is one of the tools I use here rather than the answer. What it is good at is the wind-down, the bit where your body is exhausted and your head is still holding a meeting. It is not a cure for insomnia and I would not sell it as one. The hypnotherapy page explains what actually happens in a session, including the parts of the research that are less flattering.

Two Things Worth Ruling Out First

If you snore heavily, wake gasping, or fall asleep during the day without meaning to, ask your GP about sleep apnoea before you come to me. It is common, it is treatable, and no amount of talking will touch it.

The same goes for restless legs, shift patterns, a new medication, or the amount you are drinking in the evening. Those are medical or practical problems with practical answers, and it would be a waste of your money to work on them in a counselling room.

Where We Would Work

In person in Wolverton, within easy reach of Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell, Bletchley and Woburn Sands. Online sessions are the third option, and an evening session from your own house has an obvious logic to it when the problem is sleep.

You can read what happens in a first session before committing to anything.

Common Questions

Can You Get Me Sleeping in a Few Sessions?

Sometimes the sleep shifts early, once the thing underneath starts moving. Sometimes it is the last thing to come back. I will not put a number on it before meeting you, and I would be careful of anyone who does.

What Is CBT-I, and Why Don't You Do It?

It is a short structured programme that works directly on sleep, using things like restricting your time in bed to rebuild the association between bed and sleeping. It is the first-line treatment and it is genuinely effective. I am not trained in it, so I say so and point you at your GP rather than offering you something adjacent.

Does Hypnosis for Sleep Actually Work?

It helps some people relax enough to get off to sleep and does very little for others, and there is no way to know which you are in advance. Treat the videos promising deep sleep in ten minutes with the scepticism you were already applying to them.

I'm Only Awake Because of Stress. Is That Enough to Come With?

Yes, and it is the most common reason people get in touch about sleep. You do not need a diagnosis and you do not need it to have got worse first. The stress and burnout page covers what that work looks like.

Should I Stop My Sleeping Tablets?

That is a conversation with whoever prescribed them, not with me, and not one to have on your own. Plenty of people do this work while still taking them.

Tell Me What's Keeping You Awake

Send me a message. You do not need to have worked out which of the two problems above you have, and if it turns out to be the first one I will tell you and point you somewhere better.
